The Sub-39 model was created to celebrate sixty years of the Squale brand. Introduced in 2019, the anniversary model was released as a limited edition of just 150 pieces. Today the Sub-39 collection features a wide range of watches, all inspired by the past.
All the models in the Sub-39 collection are different because each one is inspired by a watch design from the past. The element that unites them all is the case back with a diameter of 39 millimetres, or 40.3 millimetres, if we consider the protruding bezel. All the other features, however, differ from one model to another, from the dial construction technique to the bezel material.
The case back from the “Sub-39” collection is inspired by an older Squale produced in the 60s and rediscovered in Charles Von Büren’s archives. That particular watch has a diameter of 34 millimetres, dimensions typical of the time, but that is the only difference when compared to the 39-millimetre case back of the Sub39 collection.
The structure of the case back was designed to house a particular kind of crystal with a particular curvature, known as box-shaped. The shape of this crystal is flat at the base, where it is inserted into the case before becoming slightly convex. This particular construction, typically used in the past with plexiglass, was designed to guarantee water resistance. Here, it is reproduced faithfully to the original but with a unique difference: it is made from sapphire, which is much more resistant than plexiglass.
Inspired by dive watches of the 1950s, Squale’s Sub-39 collection pays homage to some of the brand’s first-ever watches. The sleek 39mm case is both dressy and functional, and the watch has an impressive 300m water resistance.
The box sapphire crystal adds another touch of vintage charm to the Sub-39 GMT, whilst adding durability with its impressive scratch resistance. Meanwhile, the ETA 2893-2 automatic movement powering the watch provides reliable timekeeping with a 50-hour power reserve.
The addition of a GMT function makes this the perfect "go-anywhere" watch for travellers, allowing you to track a second timezone, in addition to your local time.
Overall, the Sub-39 collection offers an impressive blend of refined vintage style, and practical functionality which Squale is known for. The end result is a watch that can do it all, whether you’re on the beach or in the boardroom.
About The Brand
Squale has been manufacturing professional dive watches since 1959. Back then dive watches were just emerging as a new category of tool watch, and Squale quickly established itself as a quality manufacturer of these crucial pieces of equipment.
As a result, Squale watches were worn by many record-breaking divers. In 1967 Enzo Maiorca achieved an immersion record using a Squale Master. And, in 1970 Jacques Mayol set a historic immersion record in Japan, reaching a depth of 76 meters wearing a Squale watch on his wrist.
Today Squale continues to produce many models of dive watch. All of which are professional tools able to withstand the rigours of life in the ocean.
