Sinn sure does know how to celebrate 60 years...

2021 marks the 60th anniversary for Sinn, a huge accomplishment and one I'm sure they'd rather celebrate in person rather than through a webcam on Zoom. Nevertheless, this setback hasn’t bolstered Sinn’s determination to celebrate their milestone in style, with over 8 new additions to their range. Let’s take a quick look at them now.

The Sinn U1 DS

The Sinn U1 DS - Image Credit: Sinn

The U1 DS model is limited to 500 pieces, offering an extremely exciting execution on the dial. The dial has been ground with an irregular, decorative pattern. As a result, you’ll notice an exciting play of colours as the base material on some parts of the dial reflects different nuances of light. Every dial is therefore a unique piece – the impression achieved during the machining process can never be exactly repeated, making it completely individual. The design still allows for perfect readability – thanks to the striking form, minimalist display and Sinn’s design language focusing on legibility.

Alongside these optical characteristics, the watch also boasts high-quality technical features. The case and crown are made of high-strength seawater-resistant German Submarine Steel, which enjoys outstanding non-magnetic properties. The surface of the case and the captive diver’s bezel with minute ratcheting have also been hardened with TEGIMENT Technology, leaving them especially scratch-resistant.

Thoughts

This is a brilliant unique offering from Sinn, reflecting what the brand does best. At its core this is very much a ‘to be expected’ product from the brand, however, the extra effort that has gone into the dial really sets it apart and ensures instantly you can tell there is something unique going on here. A great start to their celebrations!

The Sinn 144 St S Anniversary II

The Sinn 144 St S Anniversary II - Image Credit: Sinn

Launched in 1974, model 144 is one of the brand’s most traditional watches in their range.

To mark Sinn’s 60th anniversary, we are now introducing a special limited edition of 600 timepieces in the form of the 144 St S Anniversary II. This model clearly demonstrates the timelessness of their instrumental, technical watches. The 144 St S Anniversary II is also a fine example of how the brand is constantly developing our classic timepieces. For example, the old 144 featured a black chrome-plated case with mineral glass and was only pressure-resistant up to 5 bar.

The 144 St S Anniversary II takes things to the next level in many respects. For instance, this timepiece is equipped with a wide range of technical features, is resistant to low pressure, waterproof and can withstand pressures of up to 20 bar. Ar‑Dehumidifying Technology ensures greater functional reliability and freedom from fogging. The bead-blasted surface of the stainless-steel case has also been hardened using TEGIMENT Technology, making it especially scratch-resistant.

This type of technology forms the basis for the high-quality Black Hard Coating. Typical of a 144, the anniversary edition also features a combined tachymeter and pulsometer scale.

As a reminiscence of the company's anniversary, the number 60 of the pulsometer scale has been applied in orange-red daylight luminous paint.

Now, this is a looker. If you look back at older Sinn watches, you’ll notice just how well this new piece from Sinn has captured that design so well. As always their use of contrast for legibility and touches of colour throughout never feel over the top. A nice touch with the red 60 also.

The Sinn 358 Sa Pilot DS & 358 Sa Pilot B E

The Sinn 358 Sa Pilot B E - Image Credit: Sinn

In keeping with the design of traditional instrumental chronographs, the 358 Sa PILOT model captivates with clarity, functionality and elegance – also with two new dial options.

Firstly Sinn continued the decorative grinding found on the new U1 and offered it on this 358 chronograph. Much like the U1 this watch naturally comes with similar unique characteristics thanks to the dial which plays with the light incredibly well.

Next Sinn go ahead and offer the same watch but now with a beautiful deep sunburst blue dial complimented by ivory coloured lume to match. This is a match made in heaven as these colours are fantastic together, injecting a touch of vintage style to this extremely useful piece.
In addition to being 42 mm in diameter, the highly curved crystal made of sapphire crystal in a satinized stainless-steel case characterises the overall appearance. Sapphire crystal has also been used for the transparent case back, which enables you to take an exciting glimpse into the delicate work of the mechanical movement.
In terms of technology, Ar‑Dehumidifying Technology enhances greater functional reliability and freedom from fogging. Additionally equipped with a date and day of the week display, the 358 Sa PILOT B E model is resistant to low pressure, waterproof and pressure-resistant up to 10 bar.

The Sinn 358 Sa Pilot DS - Image Credit: Sinn

A few years ago we looked at the 356 in great detail here. It was a watch that was hugely impressive as it simply executed everything you’d ever want or need from a chronograph in a package that won't break the bank. Well, Sinn are back at it again just now with some gorgeous new dials! Put my name down for a blue one please...

The Sinn 717

The Sinn 717 - Image Credit: Sinn

Sinn has always stayed true to its roots, ultimately making a name for itself back in the early 1960s with its pilot watches and cockpit clocks. Originally designed for the German Luftwaffe’s Tornado programme in the late 1970s, the Nabo 17 ZM was a cockpit clock with a central minute counter. These types of cockpit clocks are still used by the military today in Tornado multirole combat aircraft. A special feature of these clocks was the start and reset buttons at the bottom of the case, as well as the easy-to-read orange hands of the chronograph’s central stopwatch display for seconds and minutes.
The design and style of the Nabo 17 ZM provided the inspiration for model 717. This timepiece also features a central stopwatch display for seconds and minutes in the form of large orange hands, which is created using our time-honoured SINN chronograph movement SZ01. The case houses an interior pilot’s bezel, which can be smoothly operated from the outer diameter of the watch. In keeping with its predecessor, the dial is distinguished by its excellent readability – even in the dark or under adverse lighting conditions – thanks to the sapphire crystal glass with an anti-reflective coating on both sides.

Another very ‘Sinn’ like release from the brand! The 717 is a watch that understands its influence perfectly well and translates that into a story onto the wrist. The size will put off a lot of people but this watch has a similar feeling to their 105 they introduced last November.

The Sinn U50 S Mother Of Pearl S

Sinn continues down the path of offering unique dial options on their watches with this, the U50 Mother of Pearl. Each of our 500 limited edition diving watches is uniquely numbered and boasts a light-reflecting dial that creates an exciting interplay of colour. This iridescent finish is the result of the shimmering black mother-of-pearl on the dial, which is a feature of this edition.

The overall design is completed by the Black Hard Coating, which highlights the striking form of the U50 S Mother-of-Pearl S and its minimalist display. The timepiece is also equipped with special technical features. For example, the case and crown are made of high-strength German Submarine Steel. The classification company DNV GL verifies and certifies pressure resistance to a diving depth of 500 metres (= 50 bar) and temperature resistance and functionality in accordance with the European diving equipment standards.

Thoughts

Now if anyone saw this coming then I’d be convinced they were a magician or worked at Sinn. This is crazy, wild and let's be honest, won’t be for everyone. Although I still think I prefer the standard U50, I do love the oxymoron aspect of this watch of using a dial material that is commonly found on delicate jewellery pieces in a tough as nailed, black, 500m diver...

The Sinn 104 St Sa I MG

The Sinn 104 St Sa I MG - Image Credit: Sinn

A traditional pilot watch designed in true, traditional Sinn style. This 104 model presents a clear structure, thus offering optimum readability of the time, date and day of the week.

For this model, we chose a distinctive colouring with a shimmering metallic-green dial. The instrument watch features a polished stainless-steel case. The crystal and transparent back made of sapphire crystal allows the accuracy of the mechanical movement to be admired. The pilot’s bezel with minute ratcheting can be rotated on both sides and is securely attached to the case. Its key mark is a luminous triangle.

The 104 St Sa I MG model is resistant to low pressure, waterproof and can withstand pressures of up to 20 bar.

The Sinn 104 LE from Baselworld 2019 - Image Credit: WatchGecko Online Magazine

The 104 is Sinn’s Black Bay piece with its simple but effective DNA a new dial option of this piece makes total sense. This is a model we went hands-on with back at Baselworld 2019 (remember Baselworld?) but now it's here and it's a non-limited edition release.

The Sinn 434 Women's

The Sinn 434 Women - Image Credit: Sinn

Finally, Sinn showed us their latest models arriving in their women's range, the 434 watches.

There are three additions here. The first being a steel model on a bracelet with a simple sunburst blue dial. Next Sinn takes it up a gear with the same dial and bracelet set up, however now the bezel is in gold. And finally, they have shifted into top gear with a bezel complete with handset diamonds.

The appliqués, meticulously attached by hand, are subtle in their elegance in showing the hours and give the impression of a traditional ladies’ watch.

And this watch fulfils strict requirements in terms of technology: it is resistant to low pressure, waterproof and can withstand pressures of up to 10 bar. It still features a high-precision, temperature-stabilised quartz movement. Additionally, we have minimised the electromagnetic radiation of the movement, as confirmed by the [Q] symbol on the dial.

And last but not least we have Sinn’s extension of their women's range. Naturally being a 34mm quartz-powered time only watch this is a simple but effective addition. With a price tag starting from €690 I could see these being popular options for those who prefer a more under the radar look.
