Strap Showcase: One of the most compelling diving watches for £1,000 gets a new look thanks to some watch straps...

Last year I shared my admiration for the charming French brand, Yema. We kicked this off with our Superman review which subsequently led to us taking further looks at a few of their other watches. As £1,000 diving watches go they don’t get much better than the Superman so it was only right we highlighted it a little more. However, this time we’re talking watch straps for the Yema Superman.

Before we jump straight in with a few suggestions, it is worth going over a few key points that we need to consider when picking watch straps for this watch.

1. If you own the model we’re featuring here with the 39mm case the lug width is 19mm. Traditionally this can be a bit of a pain to find quality watch straps in this odd size but as you will see in a moment, we have plenty of great options!
2. Unlike a lot of diving watches with 300m of water resistance, the Yema Superman is incredibly elegant meaning we can either lean into some smarter strap options or go down the more practical route.
3. Fortunately, the Superman has drilled lugs meaning strap changes can not only be made quickly, but thanks to the compelling design of the watch changing the straps out regularly will help keep the watch feeling fresh and will lean into its heightened versatility.

Simple Handmade Italian Leather Watch Strap in Chocolate Brown

To kick things off we start with a fan favourite. The Simple Handmade leather is one of the longest-serving straps in our range and for good reason. The quality Italian calf leather is a perfect thickness as it's not too thick to be disproportionate for the watch, but isn't too thin for it not to support the watch. The strap has a break-in period, but once that is out of the way the strap gets softer and softer with every wear. Don’t worry though, as it will still retain its shape and strength.

The Chocolate Brown has been picked here as it provides a softer, subdued look to the watch. Even the stitching on the strap is a great colour match to the lume on the Superman. Classic Style Stainless Steel Milanese Mesh Watch Strap in Polished

Let’s change this up massively now with a strap option you might not have thought would work on a diving watch. The classic mesh is traditionally best suited to small, thin dress & everyday watches. However, remember what we said about the Superman in our review and how it is incredibly elegant? Well if you didn’t believe us then here is more proof!

This oxymoron like combination proves just how difficult it can be to find great combinations as on paper this shouldn’t really work. Besford Premium Quality Genuine Leather Watch Strap in Chestnut

I could personally recommend the Besford leather strap until I’m blue in the face and I still wouldn't be bored with it. This strap has every single quality expected from a leather strap. It’s made with a simply gorgeous supply leather that is lifted by an equally soft lining. Neat reduced stitching flanks each side as the strap gentle tapers by 4mm. The grain on this leather reminds me a lot of exotic leathers due to its character and unique creases it has developed. It’s a perfect strap and one that is ideal on the Yema.

ZULUDIVER Quick Release Sailcloth Padded Divers Watch Strap in Black / Beige

Back to changing things up again as now we have something completely different. We’ve explored Yema's elegant skills so now it's time to test how practical it is. Sailcloth watch straps are a fantastic choice for those who want to make the most of the benefits of rubber straps in a subdued way.

Here the Padded Sailcloth adds some depth to this reduced piece with the texture of the Sailcloth also visually helping to bring out the details of the dial. Once again we see the stitching colour match the lume on the watch to create a matching combination perfect for those looking to put the Superman through its paces.

Vintage Otley Padded Genuine Leather Watch Strap in Brown

And last but not least we have a light brown leather strap to really lift the Yema Superman. The Vintage Otley Padded combines the best of the previous straps featured into one comfortable option ideal for regular wear. Firstly we see soft padding much like the Sailcloth we just took a look at. Next, we have matching beige stitching to bring out the lume; as seen on the Simple Handmade.

Where this strap works so well is down to its light brown colour. This option really plays off the polishing found on the case incredibly well brightening up the whole combo.

So there you have it, proof that although a 19mm lug width isn’t ideal, it doesn’t mean you should suffer and not be able to enjoy great replacement watch straps.
