Military nylon is more resistant to water, sweat and dirt than leather. It is easier to clean, typically more affordable and better suited to active lifestyles. Leather offers a dressier finish, while nylon delivers practicality and durability.

Military nylon straps are water resistant and quick drying, making them ideal for swimming, sports and hot weather. Canvas straps handle light moisture well but are not as quick drying as nylon.

You need to match the strap width to your watch's lug width, the gap between the lugs where the strap attaches. Common sizes are 18mm, 20mm, and 22mm. Military straps use a standard length that fits most wrist sizes, and the large number of adjustment holes means they accommodate both smaller and larger wrists comfortably.

Yes, as long as the lug width matches, a military nylon strap will fit any watch with standard straight lugs. They work particularly well on field watches, pilot watches, dive watches, and sport watches. They can also look excellent on more casual dress watches. The one exception is watches with integrated or proprietary lug designs that require brand-specific straps.

Nylon straps are extremely low maintenance. Rinse with fresh water after heavy use or saltwater exposure and allow to air dry naturally. For deeper cleaning, mild soap and warm water with a soft brush will remove most staining. Avoid harsh solvents or bleach, which can weaken the weave over time. Canvas straps benefit from the same approach but should be dried flat to retain their shape.

If your watches share the same lug width, one strap works across all of them. At £24–£28 per strap, military nylon is the most affordable way to build a rotation, a different colourway for each watch, or a few key straps that move between pieces. Many collectors keep a solid-colour strap for everyday wear and a striped or patterned style for weekends.
