One exciting thing that unites the watch world is the release of a new Timex. Many of us began our love affair of watches with a Timex, and we were delighted recently to cover the new Moon Phase Marlin. Today, we are looking at the newly released 2024 Waterbury Standard Coin Edge chronograph, which adds yet another sophisticated dimension, at a very affordable price, to this iconic and classic brand.

The Waterbury Standard Coin Edge exhibits their signature attention to detail with finely finished surfaces and careful applications of watchmaking hertiage. Timex has taken inspiration from pieces from their archives and modernised them while staying true to their roots with authentic Timex elements like heavier hands and bold Arabic numerals. This very well-conceived new timepiece brings us a collection of fine details, including a traditional coin edge around its bezel, a well-proportioned onion crown, a stylised W of the Waterbury Watch Company gracing its dial, and a sweep seconds hand. Designed to reflect a sense of nostalgia and pride, Timex says, "it serves as a reminder to never stop dreaming".
The Waterbury Standard Chronograph has a 40mm stainless brass alloy case and is equipped as standard with a fine quality leather strap defined by Timex's signature attention to detail. With a case height of just 9.5mm the Waterbury will slot under clothing and whilst it retains presence will not dominate the wrist. It has 20mm lugs; therefore, any strap changes will be easy. The price is kept very affordable by using mineral glass instead of sapphire, which will be perfectly adequate for the purpose. Water resistance is an entry level 50 meters, but given the general design of the watch, it is doubtful it would be used even for swimming. I'd more likely to be seen under a business suit cuff, in college halls or on an evening out.

An offset date window is subtle and unobtrusive and the second hand is adorned with a fetching counterbalance cut out of the W for Waterbury. Again, to keep costs low, the new Timex is powered by a quartz movement.
Priced at £130, the Timex Waterbury Standard chronograph represents excellent value for money and, as with so many Timex watches, bats well above its weight when it comes to cost and looks. We have found the watch a little cheaper online, so shop around before you buy; however, if you select the model from Timex direct, it's still a very fair price.
This new Timex is a great-looking watch that effectively channels a bygone era. The coin edge and onion crown are highly reminiscent of famous watches worn by American servicemen in World War 2. The coin edge is one of those design aesthetics that really dates a watch and looks good. It is wonderful to see it used so effectively again on a modern timepiece.
