Well, this is unexpected… Tissot has combined their increasingly popular PRX architecture with a digital display, conveniently naming it the Tissot PRX Digital. The design is a daring fusion between past and present and nods to a collection of digital watches the Swiss watchmaker revealed during the 1970’s and 80’s.

It’s no secret I’m a fan of the Tissot PRX, and that includes everything from the affordable quartz models to the automatic variants. These integrated bracelet watches are fantastically executed and extremely well-priced. Since its launch in 2021, we’ve seen the PRX collection grow pretty quickly, with plenty of dial colours to choose from, 35mm or 40mm case sizes and time-only and chronograph displays.

Now personally, I was half expecting the next move from Tissot to be something a little more conventional. Maybe adding a GMT complication to the Tissot PRX or bringing more case sizes to the line-up? What I was not expecting however was the Tissot PRX Digital which combines the integrated architecture of previous releases with a retro-futuristic digital display.

The Tissot PRX Digital collection presents three variations including one all-gold PVD model and two stainless steel models with either a black or silver dial. Each of the three is available in a 35mm or 40mm case size. The case and bracelet stay true to what you’d find on the analog Tissot PRX. The barrel-shaped case is satin-brushed and topped by a fixed polished bezel. The former seamlessly flows into an integrated flat-linked bracelet closed by a triple blade folding clasp.

The novelty of the Tissot PRX Digital watch is, of course, the dial. Instead of classic analog hands, a mirror-finished backdrop of silver, black or gold frames a box-shaped digital screen for revealing the time, date and more. Infact, the Tissot PRX Digital features a plethora of complications including dual time zones, day-date, chronograph, timer and alarm.

The mass of functions is powered by the Swiss made DGT-2040 Quartz digital movement and controlled by using the two new pushers on the left side of the case. From here, you can also control the digital backlight for in-the-dark reading. Furthermore, the Tissot PRX Digital watches feature mirror sapphire glass, lending it a unique retro-futuristic appeal.

It’s hard not to compare the new Tissot PRX Digital with other digital watches like those in the iconic Casio Vintage collection. Both are similar with their integrated, retro-inspired aesthetic but there’s something not quite adding up for me with the PRX. I’m not sure what it is exactly, but the round case feels mismatched with the box-shaped digital display. That’s something Casio’s digital watches do better as they stick to the rounded rectangular shape across the board.

That said, I know smartwatches and digital watches are becoming the more mainstream way of timekeeping these days, so I can certainly appreciate Tissot taking a risk here and employing their most popular model with a modern screen. And while it may not be for me, I’m sure lovers of other digital watches like the Casio A168W will find enjoyment here. But what do you think? Let us know in the comments below.
