Squale 1521 Swiss Made Diver's Watch Black Dial Polished Case - Rubber

Squale (pronounced "squall-uh"), is derived from the Italian word for shark. The iconic curved shark logo was introduced in 1959, marking the beginning of Squale's journey into the realm of dive watches. For this we can thank its creator, Charles Von Buren.

Von Buren started assembling watches under his own brand in 1959, in Neuchatel, Switzerland, however the company's roots go back further to 1948. Von Buren in 1959, also obtained the first patent for the production of dive watch cases.

Squale emerged as a prominent dive watch case maker during the '60s and '70s, gaining recognition for its 50 Atmos case characterized by the distinctive 4:00 crown position. This renowned case design became a preferred choice for several esteemed brands such as Blancpain, Auricoste, DOXA, and (TAG) Heuer, extending its influence well into the 1980s.

During this same time, Squale had been successfully making their own range of dive watches, this was right up to the end of the 1980’s.

It was in 2005, that the Maggi family relaunched Squale and started production of some of their most iconic watches.

The "VON" crown above the Squale name pays homage to Charles Von Buren, a subtle nod from the new owners, the Maggi family, who continue to steer the company today. This is only printed on the watches that have been made since the takeover, anything before that would just have Squale on the dial.

Diving into the Squale 1521 Collection

The 1521 collection dates back to the 60’s and takes its name from the original production reference that Van Büren had given it at the time. It also has the largest model lineup, with over 30 currently to choose from. This reissue has remained faithful to the original design when 50 atm pressure resistance was starting to appear on dive watches.

Let us start by looking at this black matte PVD 316L stainless steel case. PVD or Physical Vapour Deposition, is a process where a coating is applied to the steel that turns black, giving the case a unique sporty, robust appealing look. Its iconic design has a slightly recessed crown at 4 o’clock, not only had this been done for the aesthetics, but also to avoid accidental knocks during the dive.

The unidirectional 120-click bezel, with non-slip ridges, guarantees maximum safety during diving and protrudes slightly more than the case, so the watch wears slightly smaller.

Squale 1521 Swiss Made Diver's Watch Black Dial Polished Case - Rubber

The matte black dial hosts a date window at 3 o'clock and the iconic Squale logo just below the 12. SuperLuminova hour markers enhance legibility in any light condition and add to the overall aesthetics of the watch. The stark white luminescence of the hour and second hands, along with the legendary orange hour hand, creates a striking contrast. The distinctive orange minute hand is not just a design choice; it serves a crucial function, aiding divers in calculating decompression times during ascent. Orange, being highly visible in low light and poor visibility conditions, adds a functional and aesthetic dimension.

Powering the Squale 1521 is the reliable ETA 2824-2 automatic movement, boasting a 38-hour power reserve. Safeguarding the dial is a highly scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, ensuring durability in the harshest conditions. With an impressive water resistance of 500m (50 ATM), this watch is a trusted companion for seasoned divers.

Customization is key, and the Squale 1521 offers options with either a matching PVD mesh bracelet or a durable rubber strap. However, the true versatility of this watch shines when paired with a coloured Tropic or 1973 Military strap, allowing enthusiasts to infuse their unique style into this exceptional timepiece.

Although this does feel slightly smaller, at 42mm it may not be for those with smaller wrists, unless you like the feel of this. Like any watch, you must try one of these on, you won't know how it looks until it’s on your wrist. You may just surprise yourself with this one.

While the 500m water resistance and stealthy PVD coating might seem excessive for daily activities like a dip in the swimming pool or a midnight milk run to the Supermarket, the Squale 1521 Black PVD transcends its utilitarian features. Priced at £1160.00, it offers exceptional value for those seeking a super-robust, do-it-all watch that effortlessly marries form and function.

There is now a COSC Certified version of this available with a Sellita SW 200-1 COSC movement, although not a PVD model, could also be worth a look here.
