Seiko has announced the release of a new limited-edition Prospex Speedtimer, created to mark its role as Official Timekeeper of the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. Limited to 6,000 pieces worldwide, the new Speedtimer pays tribute to Seiko’s storied legacy in sports timekeeping with a vibrant tribute to Japan’s cultural and athletic heritage.

The Prospex Speedtimer 2025 Tokyo World Athletics Championships Edition is presented in a wearable 39mm stainless steel case and features a rich purple dial inspired by ‘Edo-Murasaki’ – a traditional Japanese colour historically associated with status and nobility. Also known as Tokyo Purple, this distinctive hue was once derived from local purple gromwell flowers native to the Musashino region, when the city of Tokyo was still known as Edo. In modern times, the colour has been embraced as the official branding tone of the 2025 championships, making it a natural choice for this special commemorative timepiece.

The model is powered by Seiko’s in-house V192 solar chronograph movement, offering the practicality of solar charging from both natural and artificial light sources. With an accuracy rating of ±15 seconds per month and a power reserve of six months on full charge, the Speedtimer is engineered for reliability and endurance — fitting for a watch dedicated to the world’s greatest track and field event. It also features a 60-minute chronograph function, date display at 4:30, and 100 metres of water resistance for day-to-day versatility.

This latest Speedtimer follows hot on the heels of several recent Seiko releases that have highlighted the brand’s commitment to blending tradition, innovation, and accessible pricing. In May, Seiko introduced new Prospex GMT Diver’s watches to mark the 60th anniversary of the brand’s first 1968 diver’s watch, alongside an elegant trio of Presage Classic Series watches inspired by traditional Japanese colourways. The World Athletics Speedtimer now adds a sporting edge to the line-up, celebrating not only Seiko’s craftsmanship, but also its longstanding relationship with international athletics, which began in earnest in the 1960s and has continued across Olympic and World Championship events.

The Seiko Prospex Speedtimer 2025 Tokyo World Athletics Championships in Edo Purple will be available for pre-order from 25th June 2025 exclusively at Seikoboutique.co.uk , priced at £650.
