The company’s name was originally inspired by the manufacture of high-precision marine chronometers. This all changed when the current form of the Mühle family empire was established in 1994, with Hans-Jürgen Mühle taking the helm to represent the fourth generation of the Mühle legacy. Now, thirty years on, the Mühle-Glashütte brand has gained global recognition in the modern sphere due to their production of high-quality mechanical wristwatches.

Currently in its sixth generation, we can see how the Mühle family have shaped the Glashütte watch industry with their influence continuing into the present day. The family traditions of past are still honoured in their modern releases, with current models reflecting years of passion for precise measurement, and embodying the nautical virtues of good readability, sturdiness, and accuracy.

This all brings us thirty years down the line, to January 2024, where we are set to see the release of the first model from the “Edition 1994” range, The 29er Big.

Looking smart in a 42.4mm bronze case, the special anniversary timepieces feature a stunning Mühle blue watch face with the numeral 30 highlighted in red in its minutes graduation. This unique feature pays homage to the thirtieth birthday, whereas in the classic 29er range it is usually the number 60 that is marked in red. This, alongside the red 30 in the date display, are subtle but effective nods to the company’s heritage.

In recognition of the company’s original nautical influence, the middle, bezel, and crown of the case are made of aluminium bronze, a material popular for shipbuilding due to its fresh and salt-water resistant properties. Interestingly, the bronze material forms characteristic patina over time, meaning each watch will become unique to its owner and a reflection of the journey’s taken together.

The case back features a transparent panel through which the SW 200-1 Mühle version automatic movement can be seen. The case offers pressured resistance of up to 10 bars to reliably protect the movement against seawater and other environmental influences. Worn on a blue canvas watch strap with additional padding designed to rest underneath the bronze pin buckle, Mühle have considered wearer-friendliness in every step of the production process.

The 29er Big is now available in an extremely limited run of 155 pieces. The “Edition 1994” range will continue to evolve with selected Mühle models due to launch on various occasions throughout the anniversary year. Each “Edition 1994” will have its own special anniversary features to honour the significance of a special year for the company.
