As one of the oldest and most prestigious watchmakers in Germany, Junghans have a naturally rich history and in 1951, the company presented their first single chronograph to combine telemeter and tachymeter displays. A tachymeter, in the simplest context, is a device that, when utilised on a timepiece, allows its wearers to measure speed in kilometers per hour (kph) or another unit. A telemeter on the other hand, measures the distance of an object using sound and sight, for example a thunderstorm.

The legacy of the original Junghans 1951 chronograph has been perpetuated through a number of references since (most recently the 27/3380.02 and 27/3880.44 models) but now, with a smart new limited-edition timepiece, Junghans are set to revive their history once more.

Belonging to only a handful of manufactures who offer these rarely seen two additional functions, the Junghans Telemeter Edition JF is a highly limited-edition collector’s piece with only 150 pieces being made available for purchase via the Junghans online boutique this morning.

Dripping in heritage with historical roots dating back to the 1950’s, the new interpretation of the historic timepiece takes its styling cues from the classic chronograph. Giving an attractive visual throwback to early chronographs, the Telemeter Edition JF is housed in a gold-coloured case with a black dial. Elegant, yet sporty, the Telemeter Edition JF is a charming nod to the retro character of timepieces previously manufactured by the German watchmakers.

The new Telemeter Edition JF is loyal to the design of the original with a 40.8mm stainless-steel PVD-coated case but has had a distinct modern refresh which sees the telemeter scale printed in red against a grey background. Sophisticated features such as anti-reflective sapphire crystal and a high-quality dial with luminous numerals for enhanced readability in all conditions ensure the new Telemeter Edition JF offers contemporary functionality with the magic of vintage.

Powered by the automatic Caliber J88.03 with surfaces that have been refined with a coating of rhodium. Polishing on various movement parts and the rotor, with blue screws make for a feast for the eyes when taking a peek through the window in the case back. The final look is complimented by a black leather strap with a saddle stitch seam in a grey perfectly colour-matched to the background colour of the telemeter scale.
