New watch season is blessed by a new Oris released with the help of the Fratello team…

If you actively follow the watch industry you’ll know that the end of the year always brings a flurry of new releases. Although 2020 has been anything but normal, it seems brands are continuing to respect this tradition with new releases coming from all corners of the industry.

Today Oris has released a brand new Big Crown Pointer Date variation with an oxblood red dial, in a bronze case with a few little special touches sprinkled in - courtesy of the Fratello Team.

The story of how this watch came to be is an immensely genuine one as the original idea came from a meeting with the Fratello guys and Oris in 2018. The bronze cased green dial Pointer Date had just been released and editor Mike Stockton suggested to Oris that it would be great to see the watch with a red dial as the colours would harmonise beautifully.

Oris agreed and fast forward a couple of years we finally have a look at the fruits of their labour.

So, what is actually new here?

This limited edition doesn’t just introduce the bronze case to the oxblood red dial but it also brings along with it some eye-grabbing gilt touches seen on the minute track, the Oris wordmark, the date, and the text at 6 o’clock.

After a visit to the Oris museum during the development process, the Fratello team discovered that Pointer Date models from the past mentioned ‘Anti-Shock’ on the dial rather than any reference to the automatic nature of the movement. So Oris brought this back in this addition with the dial simply reading ‘Oris, Big Crown, Anti-Shock’. Clean, simple and elegant.

There will only be 300 of these limited edition watches with the Fratello Shop or (if you’re lucky) an Oris boutique near you.

Initial thoughts

This is a match made in heaven for Oris. The red dial Pointer Date at Baselworld last year was one of the highlights of the show for me as the dial was incredibly elegant and classy in the flesh, but what the Oris and Fratello team have managed to do here really elevates the model and takes it to a whole new level of class.

Fortunately, we’ve received an image of the watch outside in the sunshine, and man does this thing pop! The dial alone is enough to make it stand out from any other watch, but sprinkle on that smattering of gilt, combine it with the bronze case and the end result is wild.

That inclusion of the gilt framing the whole dial is incredibly effective and brings the whole design together into a compelling and rather neat package. If this takes your fancy be sure to act fast, considering there are only 300 of them and they look this good I can’t imagine they will stick around for too long.
