Boldr makes a splash with its new admiral blue Odyssey Regatta

The Singapore based microbrand Boldr is no stranger to the outdoor watch market. Boldr watches are designed to be used and abused every day, built with a passion for the adventurous side of life - all at very affordable prices. The watch brand is probably best known for its tough field watches and rugged dive watches, such as its Venture and Odyssey series. Last year, Boldr undertook its first venture into the world of endurance sports with its Yachting Chronograph, designing its first Regatta Chronograph built specifically for practical use during regatta races, which has received an upgrade this year with the Admiral Blue Odyssey Regatta.

The original Boldr Regatta chronograph was created by Boldr watch designer Danny Guzzi, a true Regatta enthusiast. He was inspired by the Regatta races he witnessed as a boy and shared his vision with the team for a multi-functional classic-style regatta timepiece, that would speak to Boldr's reputation for endurance watches while fulfilling the technicalities needed in a fast-paced regatta race.

The design

Its successor, the Odyssey Regatta in admiral blue still shares the inspired design of the original, its release was intended to celebrate World Record holder and now Boldr ambassador Bhavik Gandhi, who rowed solo across the Atlantic back in 2007. The new colourway really hones in on the nautical elements of the watch while retaining all the features we saw in its predecessor. The Odyssey Regatta features a 2-in-1 bezel with a 15-minute countdown marker and a tachymeter measuring nautical miles. Boldr took extra care in designing a highly functioning and highly visible countdown timer to aid teams when making split-second decisions under immense pressure during races.

The Odyssey Regatta is a beast on the wrist, measuring 45.5mm with a thickness of 18.2mm (including sapphire crystal) in a 316L stainless steel case with brushed finishes. The case also benefits from a 60-click bidirectional ceramic bezel, a helium-escape valve and a triple-lock screw-down crown featuring the Boldr motif. The new admiral blue dial features a flyback chronograph hand and a 10-minute count back disk dial. This disk dial at 12 o'clock really sets the watch apart from other regatta watches, which traditionally rely on a series of circular apertures which would require more modification to the base movement.

All subdials for tracking functionalities are on a fine ombre texture dial, continuing its nautical theme into the boat-shaped skeletonised hands. The hands, indices and tachymeter scale are all lumed with Swiss Super-LumiNova ® for excellent legibility in any situation.

The movement

Powering the Boldr Odyssey Regatta is a Swiss-made ETA Valjoux 7750 Elaboré grade chronograph movement. This self-winding movement has a power reserve of 44 hours, protected by a screw-down caseback and triple-lock screw-down crown. This keeps the inner workings safe and dry, with a water resistance of 500 metres/50ATM or 1650 feet. The single-piece caseback also features a regatta inspired boat sailboat motif, with the unique serialised number of 01-100 engraved for this limited edition batch.
