Sébastien Muller, a fourth generation of a family of watchmakers, has worked hard to make Brellum garner a reputation for innovative designs with exceptional attention to individual detail. He can trace his ancestors' watch design heritage back to 1885, which is not surprising when you consider Brellum is based in the Jura region of Switzerland.

Sébastien gained considerable experience over 25 years in the watch industry, working in production for large brands. Then, with much-needed technical support from his equally talented wife, Christiane, he moved to Gstaad to create his first watch. The result was the now-famous Brellum Duobox, which remains in the portfolio today. The brand name is a little cryptic and was conceived from a B, for Sébastien's town of birth, Bonfol, and the family name Muller in reverse.

When designing a logo for the new brand, he was inspired by a mythological beast called a Wyvern, which always appears somewhere on his watches. A Wyvern is a dragon-like creature often seen with a magical stone encrusted into its forehead—a stone which, according to legend, could generate light. Perhaps the original Super Luminova?

The brand's wonderful  Duobox collection has been enriched for 2024 by a new Limited Edition, which will be restricted to just 46 units worldwide. The new Triple Calendar Moonphase is encased in an elegant stainless 41.8mm steel case that is water resistant to 100 meters. It also has a unique silvered dial pattern inspired by sunshine.

As well as the expected hours, minutes and seconds, and a12-hour chronograph, the new Brellum Duobox Tripple Calendar Moonphase Chronometer boasts the complication of a triple calendar with date, day and month, a day and night indicator and a moon phase at the 6 o'clock counter. It is complex but well-designed, so legibility is never sacrificed. A telling element of Brellum's design ethos which harks back to their aviation interest.

The 11.7mm high case is polished and satin finished, adding attractive texture and continuing to play with light like the dial. The complex dial is visible through the domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating, and this feature is repeated on the case back with Brellum's trademark exhibition display, which allows sight of the elaborate movement.

The COSC-Certified Valjoux movement is fully decorated with Côtes de Genève, Perlage and thermally blue screws. Most striking is the moon-inspired, decorated, and numbered rotor, which is available from 01/46 to 46/46 if you are lucky enough to secure one.

The Duobox LE is supplied as standard with a handmade black Alligator leather strap and steel deployment buckle.

With this new watch, Brellum maintains the DNA that they created through earlier iterations. As always, the engineering is exceptional, and one is constantly left with the impression that we should celebrate this brand far more than we do.
