Junghans releases their new limited max bill Edition Set 2020, a variation from the first “quinze variations sur un même thème“ graphic series

German watch brand, Junghans, releases their new limited max bill Edition Set 2020, the style and colour of which illustrates the Bauhaus artist’s monochromatic colour scheme. It is also a variation from the first “quinze variations sur un même thème“ graphic series.

The max bill Edition Set 2020

Fine white detailing on deep black: This year’s max bill Edition Set from Uhrenfabrik Junghans consummately expresses the variation 5 artwork from Max Bill. Limited to 222 pieces worldwide, this 2020 collector’s item is made up of two wrist watches which complement each other perfectly: a max bill Chronoscope and a max bill Kleine Automatic. The puristic design of each timepiece centres around concepts from Max Bill. The small automatic version from Junghans is a self-winding model featuring a diameter of 34 millimetres – precisely the size popularised by the original in 1961.

Colour scheme

A colour scheme depicted on the case back of each timepiece in this year’s Edition Set pays homage to a specific piece from the Bauhaus artist: The variation 5 from the first “quinze variations sur un même thème” graphic series demonstrates how 15 different variants can emerge from a single geometric pattern. This work inspired Max Bill to reflect “that precisely this type of art brings forth boundless possibilities”. Intricate white circular lines in the artwork conjoin the corner points of the subject, with selected sides of the basic form as prominent white bars on a background of deep black.

The graphic structures of variation 5 are reflected in the design of both timepieces: Case and dial are presented in matt black. In characteristic Max Bill typography, the white of the hour digits and the luminous substance on the hands exhibit a striking contrast. These accentuations seize upon elements from the works of Max Bill.

In addition to the white leather straps which adorn both watches, two black calf leather straps are also included in the Edition Set as optional replacements. Rotate the high-contrast or monochrome appearance of both watches as desired using the convenient quick-release function.

In this fashion, the max bill Edition Set 2020 showcases an enchanting interplay of black and white. Precisely in keeping with their source of inspiration: The variation 5 from“quinze variations sur un même thème“.
