Anthony's New Year’s watch resolutions

Every year we make our resolutions – and here I am just as fat and unfit as before. So in 2023, I’m going to make my resolutions a little more realistic: especially when it comes to the world of watches. And there are also going to be a few, which maximises the chances of achieving at least one of them. Firstly: 2023 will be the year that I own a Breitling. I’ve had a specific idea of what I wanted for a while, and that yearning has only been increased by the loan of a beautiful Breitling from my friend and colleague Richard – more on this later – so now is the time to finally make that happen.

Secondly: I want to wear the watches that I already own on a more varied basis, which means being a bit more organised about it. I have a small safe that I keep them in, so out of sheer laziness I tend to pull one out, wear it for a while, and then put it back (near the front) while getting another one out (near the front). Or just wear a Swatch, as they all live in the desk drawer. But now, I want to get down on hands and knees (that safe is difficult to reach) and do the full collection justice. Thirdly and finally, I also want a Moonwatch this year (I wanted one last year too, as well as the year before). If I’m buying a Breitling though, chances are my Moonwatch is going to be made by Swatch. Still, at least that means I don’t have to go near the safe….

Richard's New Year’s watch resolutions

I was a very lucky chap at Christmas and bought a Helm Vanuatu by my wife. While I chose and ordered it, she deftly swept it away when it arrived months ago and I did not see it till the 25th December. In a strange parallel to my friend above, I too have been wearing it every day since and sadly neglected the collection upstairs. Feeling guilty this morning I went to ring a change and was once again embarrassed that there is no space in the inn for the Helm.

I have a number of "slots" in my drawer and the collection has already spilled out to an overflow shelf. Lets be clear, this is not a tens of thousands of pounds Rolex collection. One slot, for example, is taken up with my precious £7 Casio F-91W. But the fact that I have too many. So....my resolution is to sell one or two watches which don't get much airtime and would be appreciated and loved by a new owner. It will be an agonising decision but my tastes have changed and it is a long overdue and essential exercise.

Also in 2023 I am beginning my Quest which I briefly mention in an upcoming video for the YouTube channel. I love Field Watches and through the new year I will be testing all I can get my hands on, starting with the Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical. By mid year I want to have a short list and ultimately buy the best one! I hope you will join me on this journey. As a random footnote I seem to have announced my Quest on International JRR Tolkien day which must be auspicious. Happy New Year from the team!
