We’ve written many words in the Magazine regarding the Bulova that Commander Dave Scott wore for 4 hours, 49 minutes and 50 seconds on EVA3 of Apollo 15. And we have commented on the thoroughly battered appearance of the watch when it sold for $1.6 million a few years ago. It’s illustrative of just how harsh the surface of the Moon is on equipment.
Just for kicks, I wanted to share an image I took this weekend of my son’s Citizen Eco-Drive Chronograph which he wore for nine months on an Ocean Yacht Master Course based out of Cowes on the Isle of Wight. The course culminated with a final exam where he had to captain a yacht from the UK to the Azores and back.
I recall him telling us during many voyages just how harsh the conditions were and how his Musto yachting kit was taking a beating. And so, we present the Citizen that was brand new when it set out on day one of the sailing.
The original Citizen strap was DOA back in port, so has now been replaced with a ZULUDIVER Tropical Rubber, which is holding up well. We will soon publish a feature on “daily beaters”, so this well-hammered watch makes a nice pre-cursor. I have, of course, offered to replace the watch for something less battered but my son politely refuses my offer, as he is still very much attached to his Citizen.
