Let me be straight with you, I have a confession to make that’s not widely known.
“My name is Neil and I am not a fan of Rolex”.
Now that’s out there, I feel much better. You need to know that I don’t own a Rolex and have no aspirations to do so. However, I do appreciate what they as a brand have achieved and the huge following they have. I am picking my Top 5 Rolex watches from Kibble, as they have a comprehensive selection of pre-owned pieces and maybe at the end of this line-up, my view may change, so watch this space.

Let's kick off with the 326934 black Sky-Dweller on an Oyster bracelet. At first glance, the watch appears quite busy, but it's more than a mere timekeeping device. Hailing from 2020, this model boasts a 42mm Oystersteel case with a subtle curve for a comfortable wrist fit. The case exhibits sharp edges and impeccable finishing, characteristic of Rolex's high standards.
The White Gold Fluted bezel, aptly named the Command Bezel, serves multiple functions. It operates in four positions—winding the watch (position 0), adjusting the month and date (position 1), setting the local time (position 2), and configuring the GMT disc (position 3). A sapphire crystal graces the black dial, surrounded by an outer rehaut featuring lume plots and month markers. Touted as Rolex's most intricate watch, it hosts an annual calendar requiring adjustment only once a year, typically at the end of February.
Under the hood ticks the Rolex Cal 9001, boasting COSC certification. The Oyster bracelet, adorned with a signed Oysterclasp, ensures secure placement on the wrist, adding a layer of safety to this remarkable timepiece.

Next up is the reference 1655 Explorer II with the “Freccione” (Arrow), this refers to the orange GMT hand. This dates from 1975 and the Albino refers to the yellow/white Tritium lume, which due to its age has faded. The 40mm polished and brushed Oystersteel case, features the signed crown at 3 o’clock, which is flanked by crown guards for its protection. This has the Mk2 stainless steel bezel which has large 24-hour numbers engraved and painted black on it. It also features the iconic Rolex Cyclops at 3 o’clock magnifying the date window. At 12 o’clock an inverted triangle, slender sword minute and hour hands are infilled with Tritium, and a large triangular tipped 24-hour GMT hand hits the square marker precisely. The counterweighted sweeping lollipop hand has a very distinctive look. Powering this watch is the Rolex Cal.1525 movement, bearing the coveted "Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified", which is a testament to its exceptional accuracy. As an avid collector, the appeal of this Explorer II resonates with me, making it a promising addition to my watch ensemble.

Enter the GMT-Master from 1991, featuring the distinctive faded Pepsi bezel—a true icon cherished by collectors. The GMT-Master has withstood the test of time since its debut in 1955, consistently earning its place in the Rolex hall of fame. With Sean Connery sporting one in Goldfinger back in 1964, this model has eternally held the spotlight.
The 40mm Oystersteel case bears the charming marks of a well-worn timepiece, a quality I value in watches. This GMT-Master isn't meant to be a mere display item; it should adorn wrists, not reside in a safe. The glossy dial ensures easy readability, and the Tritium indices and Mercedes hands have gracefully begun their fading journey, mirroring the Pepsi-colored bezel.
Noteworthy is the transformation of the lower section of the bezel, evolving into a gentle pink hue that elevates the watch's aesthetic. The bracelet tells a tale of many joyous years, displaying battle scars as badges of honour. This GMT-Master, with its distinct character, is a prized addition to any collection.

Let's turn our attention to the Ref:126334 41mm Datejust featuring an exquisite blue sunburst dial. The 41mm Oystersteel case has gracefully weathered the test of time, retaining its impeccable condition. Enhancing the watch's elegance is the White Gold Fluted bezel, an iconic hallmark of the Datejust, exuding a refined charm, especially when paired with the Jubilee bracelet.
The dial boasts excellent legibility, and the sapphire crystal, with a 2.5x magnified Cyclops, accentuates the prominence of the date display. An often overlooked yet charming detail is the engraved Rolex name encircling the rehaut. The delicate baton hands, infused with Chromalight, are complemented by a tapered sweeping second hand, ensuring a graceful timekeeping experience.
Powering this timepiece is the robust Rolex Cal 3235 movement, renowned for its durability and longevity. The Datejust, an epitome of aesthetic appeal, becomes even more enticing with the captivating blue dial. Since its introduction in 1945, the Datejust has not only stood the test of time but has become an integral part of the Rolex legacy.

Wrapping up my top 5 is one of Rolex's most iconic creations, the Daytona. Dating back to 1998, this specific model boasts the revered Zenith dial, distinguished by its stark black sub-dials set against a pristine white backdrop. With a 40mm case, it strikes the perfect balance, catering to the preferences of many collectors and fitting comfortably on various wrist sizes.
Flanked by robust guards, the signed crown enjoys protection on both sides, while adjacent chrono pushers add to the watch's dynamic appearance. The bezel features an engraved tachymeter scale, and the sapphire crystal ensures the durability of the crisp white dial. Tritium-filled bullet indices elegantly mark the hours, with the iconic Rolex coronet proudly positioned at 12 o’clock.
The trio of sub-dials comprises a 30-minute register, 12-hour register, and small seconds, contributing to the watch's impressive functionality. Delicate black sword hands, filled with tritium, provide a striking contrast, and the red accent of "DAYTONA" at the 6 o'clock sub-dial adds a touch of flair. Crafted for precision, this watch is a testament to Rolex's commitment to excellence, featuring the inscription "Rolex Oyster Perpetual Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified Cosmograph" proudly below the coronet at 12 o’clock.
These watches are undeniably impressive, and this Daytona, with its distinctive features, rightfully claims its place at the pinnacle of horological excellence.
Have my impressions changed since my delve into my top 5? I’m not so sure, I still prefer the early Tudors, however, if I eventually sway the Rolex way, I’ll be sure to contact Kibble for sure.
