There are some watch straps that completely change the character of a watch the moment you fit them. The new Headland Seaqual ® watch strap is designed to do exactly that, bringing together an unusual upcycled canvas material, understated colour and traditional German strap making in a slim, contemporary package.

Handmade in Germany from Seaqual yarn, a product made from upcycled marine plastic, the Headland has a tactile quality that feels immediately at home on everything from vintage-inspired watches to modern everyday pieces. And at just 3.5mm thick with padding, it does so without adding unnecessary bulk.

Why Seaqual® Yarn?

Seaqual® yarn is made from marine plastic collected as flakes from the ocean and woven into a high-quality, durable yarn. Plastic pollution in the ocean from decades of single-use bottles, packaging and clothing has resulted in over 4.6 billion tonnes of plastic ending up in either landfill or polluting the environment. But Seaqual® are doing something about this. By harvesting marine plastic to manufacture their yarn, they are not only removing harmful pollutants from the environment but are also reducing the waste from products that use their yarn. If you’ve come across Seaqual® before, they work with brands to produce sustainable apparel, furniture, soft signage, automotive interiors, and, of course, watch straps.

On the Headland, Seaqual® yarn is used across the upper surface of the strap, complimented by a calf leather lining. The result is a strap that feels exceptionally soft against the skin and lends itself particularly well to everyday wear.

Visually, the material has a distinct woven pattern creating a design that is reminiscent of older fabric straps. It is understated, but far from plain.

Traditional Construction, Contemporary Feel

While the material gives the Headland its distinctive personality, its construction is equally important.

Each strap is handmade in Germany using Remborde construction, a traditional method in which the outer material is carefully folded around the internal structure of the strap. This creates clean, neatly finished edges and a more refined appearance than simply cutting and sealing the material. It is a small detail, but exactly the sort of detail watch enthusiasts tend to appreciate.

The technique also works particularly well with the Headland’s minimalist design. Tonal stitching follows or contrasts to the colour of the leather, allowing the variation in styling to suit your watch.

A polished stainless steel pin buckle provides a familiar finishing touch, while one fixed keeper and one floating keeper hold the excess strap securely in place.

Slim Without Feeling Delicate

Thickness can dramatically alter the way a strap looks on a watch. Chunkier straps can be ideal for substantial dive watches or tool watches, but they can sometimes overwhelm slimmer cases and vintage-inspired designs. At approximately 3.5mm thick, achieved by a subtle padded internal section, the Headland sits firmly at the more refined end of the spectrum. That makes it particularly interesting for watches where you want the strap to complement the case rather than dominate it.

A vintage-inspired chronograph is an obvious candidate. So is a compact field watch, an understated automatic watch or a contemporary watch that could benefit from a slightly more adventure-ready look. The woven fabric surface compliments the appearance of polished, brushed and matte cases, while its clean construction also works well alongside more modern or angular watch designs.

In other words, this is not a strap built around one particular genre of watch.

Six Colours, Six Different Personalities

The Headland Seaqual® watch strap is available in six colourways, covering a range of neutral shades to compliment the more understated watch designs.

That colour palette is especially effective with the Seaqual® yarn. Muted colours emphasise its subtle, sophisticated texture, while allowing your watch head to not be overwhelmed in colour. Dune, Onyx, Atlantic, Driftwood, and Slate make up this more traditional colour palette.

Changing a watch strap has always been one of the easiest ways to rediscover a familiar watch, and the Headland offers plenty of scope for experimentation. A restrained colour can make a busy chronograph feel more sophisticated, while a stronger shade can give a simple three-hand watch an entirely different personality.

The strap measures 115/80mm, with two lug-width options:

Lug Width

19mm

16mm

20mm

18mm

Those dimensions, combined with the slim padded profile and soft construction, give the Headland balanced proportions suited to regular everyday wear.

A Different Kind of Everyday Watch Strap

The appeal of the Headland ultimately comes down to texture. Watch straps are often discussed in terms of colour, thickness and hardware, but the material itself can have just as much influence over how a watch feels. Seaqual® yarn gives the Headland a character that sits somewhere between rugged and refined, making it easy to dress up or down depending on the watch.

Add German hand construction, traditional Remborde finishing and a choice of six colours, and the result is a watch strap designed for enthusiasts who want something a little outside the usual leather or fabric options.

Soft, slim and deliberately understated, the Headland Seaqual® watch strap offers a fresh way to change the look and feel of a favourite watch without overpowering it.
