It feels only natural to first explain what on earth ‘padel’ is. The answer? A fairly new, but increasingly popular racket sport not dissimilar to tennis (and sometimes referred to as padel tennis), that originated in Mexico. Padel has become something of a trend, particularly for those in inner cities, as padel was developed to be playable in small areas. Padel courts have been cropping up globally for a little while now and Certina have ensured they have skin in the game.
Partner to multiple padel associations and prestigious padel competitions throughout Europe since 2021, Certina have already established their support of the urban sport as it continues to grow. In the brand’s home country of Switzerland, the watchmakers have previously partnered with Valentin Wenger and Dylan Sessagesimi, successful three-time Swiss padel champions, but now it seems it’s Marta Ortega’s turn.

Beginning her partnership with Certina in 2023, the 27-year-old professional padel player and Adidas partner has already wowed with more than ten professional titles to her name, including the award for best player in the world in 2019. As of yesterday, she also has a Certina collaboration under her belt. Marta commented on the collaboration, saying:
“I’m delighted to see the DS-7 Chrono Padel Edition with my name on it. I had a lot of fun working with the creative team at Certina. They’re so supportive and they care so much about excellence, I can’t think of a better partner. I’ll wear my new Certina with great pride.”

The special-edition DS-7 Chrono Padel Edition has been designed in collaboration with Marta and is equipped with a Swiss made chronograph movement with Precidrive technology. Featuring a carbon fibre dial that has been cleverly crafted from the same material as Marta’s padel racket, the DS-7 Chrono Padel is housed in a 41mm black PVD coated stainless steel case. In another nod to the sport Marta is known for, a small padel tennis ball can be spotted at 6 o’clock.
Featuring a dial pattern that mimics the solid, stringless bats used to play the sport with green highlights to echo the colour of the courts, the sporty DS-7 Chrono Padel is equipped to display precise sports timing results. The hour and minute hands, as well as the indexes, feature Super LumiNova highlights, creating a dial that feels uncluttered and clear, despite its functionality.

Marc Aellen, CEO of Certina, said of the collaboration:
“We’re big fans of Marta and padel, and it’s both a privilege and a pleasure to work with her. I’m really happy with the result of our collaboration. The new DS-7 Chrono Padel Edition by Marta Ortega pays homage to La Doctora’s drive, determination and extraordinary success. With her outgoing and dynamic personality, she’s a fantastic ambassador for Certina – and for padel.”
