The story of the Squale Master is set to continue in 2024 in honour of the brand’s 65th anniversary celebrations, but the origins of the revered timepiece document back to the 60’s. As any dive watch enthusiast will know, the early 1960’s was a pivotal period for diving and the watches crafted during that time were a crucial tool, with divers relying on them to guarantee safe diving.

With the popularity of free diving increasing worldwide and famed divers such as Enzo Maiorca and Jacques Mayol competing to reach ever greater depths, Charles von Büren (founder of Squale), set the brand an ambitious goal that aimed to contribute to this challenge and thus, the Squale-Master line was conceived. Exceptionally technical yet user-friendly, Büren created the model with an aim of achieving a pressure resistance of 100 ATM.

Innovative at the time and still considered to be cutting-edge, the first Squale Master boasted screw-down crown and caseback which provided superior waterproofing to more traditional pressure systems commonly used in other watches of that period.

The Master model is no longer a permanent part of Squale’s collection, but recent years have seen the release of limited-edition iterations such as the Master Marina Militare and a second Master model, the Squale All-Titanium Master x Palombari Del Comsubin, which launched in 2023 and was made of grade 5 Titanium.

The 65th anniversary of Squale sees the release of the new Squale Master Titanium 120 ATM. Destined to remain in the collection, the Master Titanium is made entirely of grade 5 Titanium which makes the new addition capable of delivering an extremely lightweight wearer experience without affecting the impressive technical characteristics that have naturally come to be expected of a Squale Master model.

The one-of-a-kind dial has been built on three levels, with the first level disk consisting entirely of Super LumiNova Old Radium with a second perforated dial applied atop it. Known as a “sandwich” dial, the third and final disc consists of the applied indexes that outline the holes of the dial, with a brushed finish to align seamlessly with the hands and the case.

Crafted with 4mm thick glass and helium escape valve, the new Squale Master Titanium is now equipped to reach depths up to 120 ATM. Perfect readability underwater is guaranteed thanks to the application of Super LumiNova to all numbering and Super LumiNova Old Radium has been utilised on the bezel, dial, and hands. This allows the new iteration to maintain a similar look to the vintage Squale Masters of the 1960’s when luminescence was provided by tritium.

This is the first of what is expected to be an exciting wave of announcement’s from Squale as they beckon in their 65th year.
