As Watches and Wonders opens in China, Roger Dubuis has released the stunning new Excalibur Spider Revuelto Flyback Chronograph.

If you want to make a splash on day one of a major show then we can always rely on Dubius to do this. Just like the Huracan Spyder we reviewed in August, this new creation makes reference to the brand's long-lasting partnership with Lamborghini Squadra Corse and is inspired by the incredible Lamborghini Revuelto – a milestone creation as this is the car brand's first super sports V12 hybrid plug-in HPEV (High Performance Electrified Vehicle).

Roger Dubuis Fifth Generation Chronograph

The scratch-built RD780 movement with built-in complications powers this new watch. Achieving 72 hours of power reserve, this calibre is like no other chronograph heart. Roger Dubuis has approached every technical detail with the intense curiosity we have come to expect from them, which delightfully results in mechanical surprises in every element.

For example, the traditional flyback function can be restarted instantaneously even when the primary chronograph is running thanks to Dubuis's innovation.

The column wheel is located at 6 o'clock and controls the start, stop and return to 0 of the chronograph, and makes the pushers smoother. This component is completely visible, allowing it to be admired when utilising the chronograph.

Through the case back, the calibre's vertical clutch is visible. The shape of the clutch is based on the Super Car design gear system. It is equipped with an innovative Second Braking System (SBS) which brings extra stability to the chronograph seconds hand and decreases "flicker" on stop.

The Heart of the Machine

The calibre RD780 has a tilted balance wheel at 9 o'clock with an inertia level similar to a tourbillon, ensuring solid resistance. Its 12° inclination compensates for the negative effects of gravity, which Roger Dubuis has worked over the years to address. The diamond-coated silicon escapement wheel is paired with diamond-coated silicon pallet stones, ensuring superior anti-magnetic performance. Every one of the 333 components is decorated by hand.

The Bodywork

This is a 45 mm timepiece in shades of orange and green, colours synonymous with Lamborghini. A signature "Y" shape bar on the dial mirrors the headlights of Lamborghini's V12 hybrid supercar. This is surrounded by super light carbon, as expected from the Excalibur Spider collection.

Skeletonised pushers and a ceramic bezel make the watch very resistant to scratches, and the carbon and ceramic make a stunning tribute to supercar construction. Unique to this watch is a floating tachymeter scale and a lower date display, all arranged in various striking angles and heights.

The Excalibur Spider Revuelto Flyback Chronograph is presented on a green rubber strap with orange stitching. Notched for extra volume, it features a Quick Release System that ensures the wearer can change the strap in seconds for more versatility.

This watch is limited to 88 units so move fast if you want to secure one.

  • When the reviewer would personally wear it: Driving any Lamborghini, although you could pull it off in a lower class of Super Car. This watch demands to be seen I would want it to be seen.
  • A friend we’d recommend it to first: Someone who owns a Super Car or wants one of the best skeletonised watches on the market today and wants to avoid a more “F1 sponsor driven” Richard Mille.
  • Best characteristics of the watch: Its complexity and design are stunning. It will turn heads just as much as the inspirational car will. Technically it's an amazing product.
  • The worst characteristics of the watch: Totally divisive. Like all Roger Dubuis you’ll either love it or hate it. Oh, and it's going to be ridiculously expensive.
