Anyone familiar with the modern watches WatchGecko stock will instantly recognise that this vintage Polymac Superman bears a strong resemblance to the Yema Superman. That’s because this “Polymac” is actually a Yema Superman that was retailed under a different brand name.

The dial follows Yema’s iconic skindiver layout, with funky numerals at 12, 6, and 9 that just scream 1960s. The handset features a bold arrow-tipped minute hand that’s easy to distinguish from the baton hour hand. Both the hands and markers are chock-full of green lume, and whilst it doesn’t glow anymore, it makes the dial exceptionally legible.

The steel case is a very wearable 39mm, and the crystal is a high-domed acrylic that further adds to the retro charm. The bracelet is Yema’s iconic “fish scale” design, that really helps set the watch apart from other watches of the period.

This vintage Yema Superman uses an ETA 2452 automatic movement. ETA are a well-known and reputable manufacturer of movements, which demonstrates that Yema intended this Superman to be a serious dive watch.

What To Know

  • The case, bezel, and bracelet feature a number of scuffs and scratches that a commensurate with the watch’s age.
  • Due to its age, the watch should no longer be considered water-resistant.
  • The lume on the minute hand has some minor cracking.

About The Brand

French brand Yema has been making watches since 1948, when it was founded by Henry Louis Belmont and would go on to be the top French exporter of watches in 1966-68.

The brand has produced many reliable models over the decades, such as the Yachtingraf & Rallygraf, but the most famous of which is the Superman. Introduced in 1963, with its iconic bezel lock and 300m water resistance, the Yema Superman was chosen to equip French Air Force pilots. Yema have continued this military history today, with partnerships with both the French Air Force and Marine Nationale.

In 2009 Yema launched their first in-house calibre, making it one of the few brands to offer watches with an in-house movement for less than £1,000. Today the brand is on its second generation of movements, with the three hand YEMA2000 and the GMT YEMA3000.

This vintage watch has been checked to ensure its authenticity and that it is running and keeping good time.
