Everyone loves a good vintage dive watch, and this example from French brand Jaz illustrates why. The modestly sized 36mm steel cushion case oozes with 70s charm and is in good condition for its age. The bidirectional rotating bezel has unusual countdown markings that stand out from the count up bezels usually seen on modern divers.

Of course, it’s the dial that’s the star of the show. The layout is typical of the era, with oversized markers and bold 12 & 6 numerals. Combined with a simple minute track the end result is a design that’s both simple and highly legible. Though it no longer glows, the tritium lume has aged to a rich honey that pops against the glossy black dial. The handset is equally legible, with both the minutes hand and lollipop seconds hand being oversized.

Inside this Jaz dive watch is a Felsa 3611 automatic movement. This movement has 21-jewels and a date feature.

What To Know

  • The case is covered in the minor scuffs and scratches expected of a watch that’s over 50 years old. The case back features some deeper dents and scratches from prior removal.
  • Due to its age, the watch should no longer be considered water-resistant.
  • The beads of rice bracelet has stretched due to age.

About The Brand

Jaz was a French brand that was founded in 1919. It produced watches and clocks but was known primarily for the latter. The company continued to operate throughout the Second World War, when it adopted the Jaseur bird as its logo. By the end of the war Jaz had produced over 10 million units and would continue until the end of the century. However, like so many other watch brands it fell into trouble during the Quartz Crisis of the 1980s, eventually becoming a sub-brand of Seiko in 1988, before being wound up entirely in the late 1990s.

This vintage watch has been checked to ensure its authenticity and that it is running and keeping good time.
