Inspired by an intensive 50-week training programme...

This new 2020 Luminox is inspired by the Navy SEAL intensive 50-week training programme. At week 4 of Phase 1, Physical Conditioning, there is by all accounts a horrendous five day period known as “Hell Week” where candidates spend day and night soaking wet, sandy, little or no sleep, running more than 200 miles on top of physical training for more over 20 hours per day. It is the true measure of a soldier and unsurprisingly the attrition rate is high. As potential SEALs embark on this journey the instructors have a simple message for the new recruits – The Only Easy Day Was Yesterday.

To pay tribute to this unique mindset and test Luminox have release a TOEDWY Special Edition as part of their 3800 series called the 3801 Master Carbon SEAL Military Dive Watch. Limited to 827 pieces, this rugged 300m military timepiece features a Luminox’s propriety CARBONOX case in a unique grey colour, with red markings for the first segment of the unidirectional turning bezel, and the unofficial Navy SEAL motto, “The Only Easy Day Was Yesterday,” in matching red on the lower half of the dial. It is powered by a capable Ronda 715 6HH movement boasting 96 months of batter life and, as a complete unit, weighs only 90g so it will not feel like a diving weight on your wrist as you are forced to swim underwater for yet another 100m in a freezing ocean. The dial itself is highly unusual. Luminox do not actually mention it in PR material but it resembles tree-bark and is very striking. The indices and hands are black which gives the watch a very tactical look and this is offset well by the vials of tritium which shows as white markers in daylight and an impressive multi-coloured lume display at night.

This special edition is limited to 827 units. 827 is the key score on the SEALs Physical Screening Tests where the lower your score the better. Candidates who score lower than the magic number of 827 in PST are three times more likely to pass the next stage called BUDS (Basic Underwater Demolition SEAL) Training. 60% of the remaining class will fail BUDS and signify their need to “quit”, due to pain or fatigue, by ringing a bell which is mounted on the beach. In the world of SEALs, 827 represents the toughest and best of minds, souls and bodies.
The good news is that you do not have to tackle Hell Week to own this Luminox Special Edition. It is definitely one of the best special models made by Luminox. It is a very unusual design of watch which would really be a special piece if you have any link to, or are just inspired by, the US SEALs. In the way that SEAL warriors are unique, it is safe to say that you will not have anything like this in your watch collection.
